You Do Not Get Paid With Rebates

You go shopping and spend $300. A month later the store where you spent that money sends you a check for $25. The question for you is did you just earn $25?

You better hope not because the IRS will come knocking on your door for tax on that $25.

The good news is this is nothing more than a rebate and the IRS treats it as a discount. It's as if you spent $275.

The point of this entire post is when you read about offers online for making money with rebates, don't expect to make any money. Earning money comes when you receive MORE than what you pay out.

This is an important distinction and it is what will be used by the IRS to determine whether you need to send a check to them.

For instance, banks often like to entice people to open an account by giving them cash or products. Is this considered income?

Yes. The point is, you made more than you spend and therefore that is considered income. Whether or not you will have to pay to the IRS depends on many factors. Your tax bracket is going to be a big determinant here. It' likely that one income offer here or there isn't going to raise any red flags.

This blog post is not meant to offer any financial or tax advice. Please consult a professional before using the information contained in this post.

Are Rebates Worth the Effort?

People love deals. However, how do you know the companies aren't raising their prices just to be able to offer a rebate? To see if they are worth it in the long run, make sure you are comparing prices among different sellers. Check Amazon, Walmart, and even eBay to see if those rebates will amount to anything significant.

Sometimes, searching for deals takes more effort than it's worth. Do you really want to spend two hours finding a rebate of $5? If you feel getting $5 is worth it, then by all means, knock yourself out!

Coupons Are Similar to Rebates

When you find online coupon codes to plug into your shopping cart, these act in a similar manner as rebates. The big difference is in the timing of when you receive the benefit. With coupons, they are applied instantly whereas with rebates you need to wait a while before receiving them.

Coupon codes also do not add any income. They are simply discounts.

Selling Old Items

You go through your closet and find items you'd like to list on eBay or other online selling places. You find a buyer and they proceed to pay you. The deal is done when you ship out the product. Is this considered income?

It depends on what you initially paid for the item. If you received more for selling online than you paid, then it would be considered income.

Again, it's going to depend on many on whether the IRS will come-a-knocking at your door. If it's a one-off deal, you probably won't run into trouble. If you make a business out of it, you can expect a call.

Don't Spend for the Sake of the Discount

Many of these rebate sites get people so hooked into using them that they end up spending money on unnecessary items. There is an old saying, "when is a bargain not a bargain? When you don't need the item."

The rebate sites make money whenever you spend. Usually, they receive an affiliate commission from the vendor. That is how they make their money. The takeaway is they will do whatever they can to get you to spend.

Beware the Recurring Income Schemes

Rebate websites would love nothing more than to get you hooked into a recurring income setup from one of its vendors. Think memberships here. When they convince you to take a trial into the membership, they receive hefty fees from the vendor. In many cases, they continue to receive fees as long as you stay a paying member.

The catch is they rely on you to forget that you signed up or the vendor makes it extremely difficult for you to cancel.

These schemes have come under fire of consumer groups lately so they many have made it easier for subscribers to cancel. This does not address you forgetting to take action and cancel the membership, however.

The enticement by the rebate company is high payouts for these types of offers. Usually, they amount to the cost of the first month's membership which means you get that month for free.

Most of these memberships are not worth the cost to stay a member. You can usually find as good or even better deals online. So, signing up just for the sake of getting the payout can become a dangerous game to play, especially if you let several slip through the cracks and forget to cancel.

Another issue is that it's a fuzzy line as whether you received income for the membership. If you get paid more than the cost of the membership than the difference is considered income.

Always understand the terms of the deal before signing up for anything. Know how to cancel the membership before you get billed and consider contacting the company before signing up to see how customer service handles the call.

Debt Forgiveness

Although this doesn't have anything to do with rebates or coupons, be aware that should you take advantage of a debt forgiveness deal, the IRS will consider what you don't pay as income. Since the amounts are usually in the thousands of dollars (creditors won't offer deals when it's only in the hundreds), the benefit you receive is likely to be significant enough to warrant IRS attention. In fact, creditors are required to register the debt forgiveness event with the IRS, so don't think you may be able to skate by. You won't!

Conclusion

Don't fall for the hype of making money when you sign up for rebate websites. You may still find some value in the websites but don't look at it as a means to generate income. It's a quick way into the poorhouse!

If you are looking for a great way to generate income, consider using my #1 Recommended Method. You'll be shown how to build a legitimate business capable of making some decent income.

Do You Really Need to Spend Money to Make Money?

You hear this advice all the time, i.e., you need to spend money to make money. But, is it true? Has anyone ever made money without spending something to do it?

This article will give some insight into this oft-spoken statement. My view on this may surprise you. Read on.

What Will You Spend Money On?

I don't doubt that if you put money into some kind of investment and it pays off, you will join the Spend Money to Make Money (SMTMM) club. If you learn about a business that costs $100,000 and you end up making $500,000. Then, that may have been a wise use of your money.

But, in this day of the internet, why can't you start an online business, without having to give up a chunk of your savings (in many cases, all of it)?

Getting back to what will you spend, do you know what you need to spend in order to start earning on that spend? Most people don't. This is why they find themselves spending needless amounts of money with no gains to show for that money.

The answer is to create a business plan. This is crucial. It helps you understand exactly what you need to spend money on so that it has the highest chances of earning.

But a business plan requires knowing what kind of business you want to start and how you are going to make money with it. I'll get into this in more detail later.

Take on a Mentor

Most people are not savvy in business. They shoot off-the-cuff and haphazardly try whatever comes their way. It's not a character flaw. This is simply the way we are wired and we need to take measures to correct this. The best advice is to find people who are experienced and can guide you to take the right steps. They can also help you focus on what you should be spending your money on.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of hacks that will claim they are mentors or business coaches. The truth is many of these people have never succeeded in business. This is why you need to be critical about the people you choose to mentor you.

Time is Money

You have probably heard this phrase about as much as you've heard SMTMM. But, the truth is, most people don't equate time with money and end up wasting much of their time on activities that won't amount to increasing their rate of investment (ROI). Scanning your email every fifteen minutes is not a business activity that will reap rewards.

Know What You Need to Get Done

You may ignore my advice to take on a mentor, and that's okay. Just make sure you have a solid plan that contains actionable goals and tasks. Also, measure the success of the plan at certain milestones. Otherwise, be prepared to flounder.

To know what needs to get done requires you to learn. Too many would-be business owners think they know everything. They opened a business after all. They must know what they are doing, right?

Along those same lines, make sure you are really critical about what is working and what needs adjusting. We all get too caught up in finding excuses. God forbid we should reflect on efforts and introspect about what we are doing!

Be Willing to Take Criticism

If you are looking for someone to say yes to every question you ask and never challenge your decisions, I am available for a reasonable fee. I'd be happy to say yes to every email you send me as long as you continue to pay me. 🙂

I hope you take that in the joking manner it was meant. I care about your success and want you to realize that you need people who are willing to be upfront with you. As long as they have your best interests at heart, you should listen to what they have to say, especially if they hold authority.

The ultimate responsibility of your business rests with you. If you listen to the advice of mentors and fail, you can't blame them for it all. If it turns out you got bad advice, find others who will give you good advice, or at the very least, learn what went wrong and pick up the pieces from that.

A Business Where You Don't Need To Spend Any Money

I am not going to lie to you. If you have a decent sized budget, and you know what you need to do to earn with that budget, you'll get to where you want to be much quicker. However, most of us don't have budgets. But, we don't want to miss out on creating a viable business that can earn a job-busting income.

There's good news - you can set up a business and start out with no spending whatsoever. Do yourself a favor, though. Once you start earning with this business, consider putting some of your earnings into growing the business.

This is a mistake many newcomers make and in every instance, they wished they had put some of their earning back into the business!

So, now that I have answered the question of whether you can run a business at no cost (you can), the next question or concern to answer is what kind of business is this? How will you know what to do?

Before I answer that, please don't make the mistake most new business owners make - they try to start a new business without any training.

Huge Mistake!

And totally unnecessary. I know, you probably think I am about to spring some expensive training program on you. Don't Worry! When I said no cost I meant it.

Most marketing hacks will try to convince you that while you can start your business for free, you need to pay huge amounts of money to learn about the business. And they just happen to be the ones who will train you!

Don't Listen to these jokers! Most of
them have never made a single sale!null

Why Listen to Me?

That's a fair question. Because I have the experience necessary to bring you to a place where you can start earning real money. I do it because I like helping people. It's the personal satisfaction that I get in doing so.

But, there's an underlying, hidden reason I like to help people with their businesses. To break the shackles of corporations. I hated being a slave to the corporate titans. They control every aspect of your life. If you're five minutes late they look down upon that. But, they have no problems making you work overtime for no pay. They could care less about your personal life.

I want to let every person I can, know that there are alternatives to "working for the man!" Some people love the corporate world. Good luck and God Bless! For me, and most others, you need a low cost (in this case, no cost) way to earn as much (and usually more) than what these corporate whores are paying you (pardon my language!)

Would You Try to Fly a Plane Without Training?

Let me know if you will and what your possible flight plan is going to be so I can be as far away from your journey as possible. I think you see where this is going. While learning how to create a business online isn't as detailed as learning how to fly, there are plenty of nuances you need to be aware of.

The biggest is knowing what kind of business to create. One of my biggest tips for newcomers is to create an affiliate business. Essentially, this is a partnership between you and vendors, like Walmart, Amazon, and Target, etc. You send traffic to their product sales pages and if that traffic buys from your link, the vendors send you a commission on that sale.

Seems easy enough, right?

It is. But, inexperienced business owners make the mistake of throwing a few banners up on a web page and hope for millions of dollars in sales. It doesn't work that way.

You'll get into the details when you go through the training. But, you need to provide something to your readers that will differentiate you from others who are doing the same thing (think competition!)

Starting an affiliate business is a good choice for beginners. You don't have to worry about finding suppliers and stocking up on pallets of merchandise.

BTW - if you decide to sell in bulk and think that you can load up your garage with merchandise by the pallets, expect to get a nasty letter from your town or municipality. A neighbor or two will complain about you doing this. Just a word to the wise!

With the affiliate business model, your neighbors won't know anything about it (unless you tell them) because everything is done online!

You won't need to set up a shopping cart nor payment processors. The vendor does all of this for you. As you can see, this is one of the few business models that you can implement completely free of charge.

If you happen to come across affiliate managers who ask for payment for the "privilege" of selling their products, head for the exits!

This affiliate arrangement exists across several vendors in just about every industry. The good news is you can earn commissions on industries that you find interesting. This includes hobbies!

The takeaway here is you can get paid for your hobbies! Schweet!!!

It's a No Brainer!

Several people who I have introduced this concept too, get excited and exclaim to me this seems like a no brainer. And they are correct. You could even do this type of business model while you are still working in you soul-sucking corporate job.

How would your attitude change if you knew you were making money even as you continue to work in your current job! I am going to go out on a limb and state that you would be a whole lot happier, no?

Why Don't More People Take Advantage of This?

I think there are several reasons with the biggest being a lack of knowledge. Also, due to the ease of entry, people go into it thinking there's no work involved. They get disillusioned when they discover it takes time and effort (but not necessarily money)

Another possible issue is not having the time to develop the business. Maybe you are stuck working 12-hour days. The last thing you want to do when you get home is to work on a business. In this case, you could get someone else to do the work for you. This would leverage your time and develop your business at the same time.

If you are consistent with this strategy, you could quickly develop your business to the point where you can leave your current work situation. Even if you don't having extra cash on a frequent basis never hurt anyone.

Next Steps...

What if you waited five years and didn't develop some kind of income-generating business? You would be pondering what life would be like if you had.

Conversely, if you start something now and develop it to the point where you are making some money, your life is going to only get better. You will no longer need to worry about whether you're going to get a raise or bonus from your company. You can create your own.

Of the two choices, i.e., pondering what might have been or actually doing, which would you choose? You've got nothing to lose by taking action. It's a head rush when you start earning money online. I can state this from experience. When you see the emails stating that you received a payment, it's exhilarating.

Do You Brush Your Teeth? You Have What It Takes to Succeed

Do you brush your teeth? Seems like a rather odd question to ask - especially on a website about getting paid, no?

However, if you do brush your teeth on a regular basis, this could help you to succeed in your business. (See Below).

Want to skip right to how to make money online? Use my #1 Recommended Pick to find out how!

Why We Brush Our Teeth

When we were kids, we were told by our parents that we have to brush our teeth. We'd ask why. Our parents would tell us it's because we don't want our teeth to fall out.

But wait! Didn't we get paid money any time a tooth fell out? The story went that the tooth fairy would come and take the tooth in exchange for some cash!

Tooth Fairy

Hmmm. Doesn't sound like a good motivator to brush our teeth.

The point is, kids don't really care whether their teeth are going to fall out. They care about eating dirt or figuring out what they are going to get for Christmas, etc.

Over time, and with constant badgering from your parents, it sinks in that you need to brush your teeth!

Click to Tweet

You Formed Good Habits Early On

Even though you needed to be told by your parents each night to brush your teeth, eventually it became part of your daily routine. This is why you don't need your parents now to tell you to brush. You just do it. You have built up this habit by constant reinforcement.

Success in Business Works the Same Way

When you are running your business, if you have a series of tasks that you believe will lead you to success, you need to repeat them in order to make them part of your daily routine.

What kinds of tasks should you repeat?

It's going to depend on the type of business you run, but if your business interacts with people online, you'll could do the following as repetitive tasks:

  • Post content on Facebook
  • Create posts for your blog
  • Post relevant comments on forums
  • Find guest post opportunities and post
  • Tweet updates about your business
  • Create a video as it relates to your posts
  • Create a SlideShare presentation
  • Etc.

This is by no means a complete list (not even close). But, it should give you some idea o the types of tasks that you can get in the habit of doing repeatedly.

 How to Get Started

Good habits are formed by being consistent and frequent in your efforts. If you were to take on all the above tasks, plus any others you come up with, you will likely fail at developing them into habits.

Instead, every time your brush your teeth going forward, thing about your business. Initially, don't worry about the tasks themselves. Just set your mindset to think about your business each time you brush your teeth. Do this for two or three weeks.

Then, when your mindset is focused on your business when you do the simple act of brushing your teeth, you can start to incorporate one task from your list of tasks. You still don't need to do the task but simply think about it any time your brush your teeth. This will further your thought process that the task is important.

As you train your mind to focus on the tasks while brushing your teeth, when you actually start implementing them, the thought process behind them will be automatic.

Association Creates Mental Pathways

When you associated something you do on a regular basis with new tasks, you take something familiar (brushing your teeth) and you add something not so familiar (such as tasks that you need to do in your business).

The ideal way to go about this in small increments. Try the most important task first and then once it's a regular habit, add others in, one at a time.

What If You Don't Have a Business?

If you don't have a business of your own, it's super easy to get started with one. And you really should because it's easy. You just need to know what steps to take in order to get going on it. I can show you these steps which you can use to get started right away.

Even if you still have a full time job, you can get started part time to develop your business. By using the brushing your teeth paradigm, you will have what it takes to accomplish the tasks needed for this new business while you continue working in your job.

If you really feel like you don't have the time, you can hire others to take on the tasks. Just ask them if they brush their teeth everyday (just kidding).

TURN YOUR HABITS INTO CASH

By clicking on the button below, you will learn about the #1 training program that teaches people how to make money. It makes no difference if you are a beginner or a seasoned business owner. You will get the proper training that you can use immediately to start earning.

Blogging by Efron Hirsch – Book Review

The book describes what components you will need to make money with a blog.

If this book were written 10 years ago, I would probably have a different opinion than I do now. It's not that it's a bad book or poorly written. It's just that the information contained within, you can easily obtain it online for free.

Blogging by Efron Hirsch

Title: Blogging

Subtitle: The Ultimate Guide On How to Replace Your Job With a Blog

Author: Efron Hirsch

Recommended: Read Review...

If you want to get access to a totally free system that shows you all the steps you need to take to make money with your blog, don't hesitate to check out this system. It's My #1 Pick for Making Money Online!

PROS vs. CONS

PROS

  • Well written
  • Complete List of Components (without implementation details)
  • Some Useful Links

CONS

  • Too General or High Level
  • Basic Information Found Elsewhere (for free)
  • Will Need More Instruction Than is Available Here
  • The word "Ultimate" in the subtitle is a huge stretch.

The information presented in this book is too high-level. There are some useful links, but overall, you will need more instruction even after you complete the book.

The author even specifies that some people may criticize the book for being too basic. He states that if you already know how to do it, you wouldn't need the book and it's meant for beginners.

However, even if you are a beginner who has never created a blog before, you won't be able to hit the ground running, so to speak, after reading this book. It is simply too basic to give you that capability.

The book does list the components that a typical blog should contain. It doesn't seem like anything was left out of that list. I also like the fact that he specifies that in some countries, like the United States, you will need to disclose the fact that you are getting paid by vendors. That is a positive aspect of the book.

There are some useful links in the book that will lead you to resources that you'll find useful, although, you'll probably be confused as to how they fit from just reading this book.

Conclusion

You will need more to earn money with a blog than the information contained within this book. That is the bottom line. I cannot in good conscious even recommend the book as a beginner's book because you will need to supplement your knowledge with other resources. The information in the book is not incorrect, it's just not complete.

Distraction-Free Ways to Create Content

We all know the importance of creating great content. It's the one true component that not only survives Google algorithm updates, but is encouraged by them.

But, if you're like me, you get easily distracted when creating your content. Has this ever happened to you?

You start brainstorming for content and this leads you to go in several different directions. You check the weather, sports scores, etc. You think of something that you wanted to get done from a week ago, and you branch off to try to get that done.

After you finally get your content written (after a day or two of distractions), it's time to find some images for your content.

Once again, you set out to find images and the next thing you know, it's a day later and you've scanned through dozens of unrelated sites in the meantime.

Streamline the Content-Creation Process

I knew I needed a way to streamline the process of creating content. After some research - and more distractions 🙂 - I came up with a way that helps reduce those distractions. Here is what I do now:

  • Create an Outline
  • Start Your Research and Bookmark Potential Research Items
  • Obtain All Your Assets Before Writing (Video, Audio, Images, Infographics, etc.)
  • Schedule Time Based on Outline
  • Create a Tagging System
  • Take Advantage of When the Muse Strikes
  • Enter your text here...

  • Edit After Each Outline Section

Create an Outline

Once I started creating outlines, my content creation efforts exploded. Before I did this, I would struggle to find what I would write about. Now, I just go down the list of outline items and write.

Also, making an outline will help you in the section titled, Obtain All Your Assets Before Writing. You'll have a better idea of the assets you need just from your outline.

Start Your Research and Bookmark Potential Research Items

Research is an essential part of content creation. But, reading through each item and writing based on what you have just read, sets you up for some serious distractions. A better approach is to find potential articles that you want to use and bookmark those pages.

When you are ready to write your content, then you can start to read through the meat of the research and determine which items you may use for your content.

Note: you may find that doing the research before your outline makes more sense. If so, simply switch the order of execution.

Start skimming the research to determine whether the research you obtained truly fits with the idea you are going for. It should go without say that you are not looking to copy anything from your research and you should cite your sources whenever possible.

Obtain All Your Assets Before Writing

Too many content creators write a paragraph, then go and try to find something to fit in the paragraph, like a video or an image. Then, they go back and write another paragraph or two and look for assets that fit for this paragraph.

As mentioned, your outline will give you the ability to predetermine those assets before you even write your content. Why is this important?

Because when you bouncing back and forth between writing content and looking for assets, you increase your chances of getting distracted. If you have those assets ahead of time, you can write your entire content document and then fit the previously obtained asset. No need to search for anything, at this point.

Note: you'll come across times when the assets you've selected don't fit as well as you thought, or you need more assets for your content. I'll get into this more with the section, Create a Tagging System. This will help you prevent breaking your work to find those assets.

When you have your assets, upload them all to where you are going to use them. This is a better practice than interrupting yourself while you are writing.

If you are using WordPress, you can go into the media manager and upload those assets ahead of time. Then, when you are ready to add them, you can simply hit the Add Media button in your post or page.

Caution: If the multimedia assets are large or likely to use a good amount of bandwidth, you should consider housing those assets somewhere else that can handle the bandwidth. For instance, if you have videos, you can house them on YouTube. If you want more professional access, use Amazon's S3 or some other solution from WordPress or Vimeo. You'll have to pay for these but it's better than getting shutdown from your hosting company if you go over on your bandwidth.

Schedule Time Based on Your Outline

For each item in your outline, take a guess as to how long you need to write your content. If your content is a video, you'll probably want to add much more time than written content.

You will get better at this the more you do it. You will start to get a good feel for how long each outline section will take. It's okay to be wrong, especially in the beginning. Don't let wrong estimates get you down. Just keep going. Push subsequent items out when you go over.

Create a Tagging System

You'll come across unanticipated items. Perhaps you gained more insight as later in the process than when you started. One way to keep the flow going is to continue writing and tag (like bookmarking) places where you need to fill in later.

I like to use brackets {} or [] to indicate you need to fill in some further details later. Other people use a tag like TODO: etc. Whatever works for you is fine. Just come up with something.

If you find you are tagging many sections, perhaps that is an indication that you need to capture more research or you don't know the subject as well as you though.

You could also use this tagging system as a placeholder for where your assets such as videos and graphics are going to go into the document.

Take Advantage of When the Muse Strikes

Most people find their inspiration comes in spurts. Some people get that burst of inspiration in the morning while others may find it on a certain day of the week. When you find your zone, try to create several content items during that inspiration period.

For example, if you plan on creating four blog posts for a particular week, write all of them on one day and schedule them.

Edit After Each Outline Section

Editing is one of those dreary activities that are necessary evils. Too many content creators skip this task altogether. The problem is after the content is finished, you often have this huge document that you'll need to read through and make changes. This is a surefire recipe to do anything but, thus getting distracted.

If instead, you do your editing after each outline section, it won't seem like such a gargantuan task.

Conclusion

You may choose to use all of these methods. Or, you may find only some of them work for you and discover others that work better for you. The key is to make it into a process so that you can easily follow the steps. Whatever steps you choose as part of your process, you will have a much less chance of getting distracted when creating your content.

It’s Nice to Share! Or Is It? ShareMagnet Review

Product: ShareMagnet.com

Cost: $0

Summary: ShareMagnet.com should not be looked upon as being a scam but don't expect much from the service. There are plenty of other places where you can get much more for money for the effort.

Affiliate Disclosure: Site owner will receive a commission on products or services purchased via links/banners on this page.

Analysis

The concept behind this website is you get paid to share. What do you share? You share what other members post to the website. You will be given a list of posts that have payouts associated with them. If you share those posts on your social media channels and they get clicked on, you get the amount specified.

Pros

This is an easy way to make a little money. If you get enough shares and the payout amount is big enough, you can earn a decent amount.

Cons

The payout amounts listed are usually quite small.

You are essentially sharing advertising on your social media channels. Not everyone of your fans/friends are going to appreciate this, especially the more you do it.

Don't expect to retire from a program such as this.

What You Get

The concept is appealing. Advertisers bid for their content (products and services) to be shared. They specify the amount. If you share it and one of your followers clicks on it, you get the bid amount. Seems simple, no?

Cents on the Dollar

If you are wondering how much you can get paid, you are looking at cents on the dollar. Some offers will give you 20 cents while others will be much less than that.

The appeal is if you have a large following and you know many will click, the money multiplier kicks in. That's where you could theoretically make a fair amount of money.

The problem is, no one on social media wants to be sold to. So if you do this often enough, you can expect your following to dwindle. People will catch on to the fact you are sharing or the sole purpose of getting paid. Shame on you!

You're Brand Is at Stake

Even if you aren't selling anything, your reputation matters in social media. Get a bad reputation, and it's going to be difficult to recover from that. Being overly promotional is going to give you a bad reputation. It's almost a guarantee.

Therefore, you should think twice about trying to make any significant money with this program. It should be used sparingly and that defeats its purpose.

No Indication of Referral Program

Many programs of this nature offer the ability to recruit others and get a portion of their activity, in this case clicks. This gives members incentive to convince others to join. It can also lead to higher earnings as you are piggybacking off the efforts of others and you don't have to worry about negative aspects on your social media, because the referrals are the ones doing the sharing.

There is no indication that ShareMagnets has a referral program. This means that the only way to earn is to share for the clicks.

Complaints

In 2014, one report on RipoffReport.com shows how the company does not pay. There are some other reports floating around stating that the company does not always credit for the right amount of clicks. In other words, if you get 20 clicks, they will credit your account for 15, etc.

Bottom Line

ShareMagnets is not a scam, although if the complaints listed above are substantiated, it should probably downgraded to a scam. The bottom line is you will not make a lot of money with this company. Simply stated, there are much better ways to make money online.

Is It Too Late To Make Money Online?

I happen to love scanning old newspapers about articles on just about any topic. Sometimes I randomly select topics and years for my search, just to see what comes up.

Other times, though, I search for something specific. I had been researching pieces about getting paid online around the period of the Dot Com Bust. The year I found was 2000.

The article I saw was about concerns for missing the Internet Gravy Boat. That's the same topic as this post but just worded differently. I mean, seriously, people were concerned in 2000 that they missed the boat in making money online? The internet only started getting popular in the mid 90's! The year 2000 is only five or six years later. How can anyone possibly miss the boat in five years?

But, here we are in 2016. And after 20 years (mid 90's on), you may be wondering if it is too late to make money online. Let's face it - 20 years is many more than 5. It's more relevant to believe that online business is saturated and too competitive at this stage of the game.

What About Millennials?

Another concern is recent news about Millennials starting up companies. How can we compete with them? I mean, these rascals know everything about technology and they seem much more well suited for starting up businesses, don't they?

Unfortunately, millennials are considering start ups only because they aren't able to find jobs, at least not ones that would support the kind of lifestyle they envision living. Entrepreneur to many millennials is simply something to do because there is no other choice. This doesn't make them good at it nor do they necessarily know what to do.

This isn't to say some millennials won't make it as entrepreneurs, even when placed in that situation by no choice of their own. Every group of people will have their fair share of innovators and people who put themselves in the right place at the right time.

And, like any other group, millennials learn quickly that starting up any venture comes with a lot of work and there is no guarantee of success.

Aging Population?

There's also the other side of the spectrum, the Baby Boomers. I read a statistic that shows 10,000 Baby Boomers retire each day. What's interesting about this though, is many of these Boomers want to do something during their retirement, including work.

So, it's perfectly conceivable to believe this group will be starting up business online as well. And truth be told, many of them will.

Between the Millennials and the Boomers, how can anyone possibly carve out a niche competing against these two groups?

Let's also not forget every other group who may have been searching for work but simply gave up. When they discover there's money to be made with this internet-thingy, they are likely to jump in and get started.

Take a Step Back

Before you throw in the towel, and declare market saturation, consider that no group inherently knows how to form or run a business. They have to learn how to do it. Most of them will try every scheme to see which one eventually works. The problem with this brute force approach is they typically run out of money well before they see success, if ever.

Imagine if you learned how to create your online business the right way. You'd be way ahead of all of these other people, wouldn't you? How cool would that be?

It Takes More Than Hard Work

I have no doubt many of the people in the above groups mentioned will start out working hard. They will put every effort imaginable and work hard with the limited knowledge they have acquired. The trouble is, working hard on the wrong tasks or methods is a path to surefire failure.

When you know what to do and have the steps to do it, you simply follow those steps. If you do this, you may find people start coming to your website and will start subscribing to your list or even better, may start buying from you.

Need Affordable Small Business Website Design?

Have you ever looked at another website and thought, wouldn't it be great to have something like that yourself? If so, you may be in the market for affordable small business website design.null

Hiring a website designer can get expensive. There's no guarantee that even when you do, your website will turn out that great.

Note: Site owner may receive compensation from purchases made via the links and/or banners contained on this page!

There's also no guarantee that a great looking website will bring traffic and sales. There are plenty of good looking websites sitting idle or finding their way into blog oblivion.

What Are Your Options?

Having many options is both good and bad. The good is you get to choose and hopefully save some money in the process. The bad is you may not know how to choose. That's where this guide will help!

Do It Yourself (DIY)

Okay, so you're not a website designer. No Biggie! You can still find a way to have your cake and eat it too. That is, you can develop your website yourself. This was not as easy to do ten or so years ago. Before Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress came onto the scene, your best choice was to hire someone to design your website.

CMS gives the average person, without any design skills, the ability to create professional looking websites. They also give you the ability to update your content on a frequent basis. Before, you had to ask your designer to make updates for you.

How It's Done

Going forward, I'll refer to WordPress as that is the most popular CMS. The concepts between each CMS package is similar. If you use another type of CMS, you can still follow along!

WordPress uses a modular concept. It is a framework that allows users to make changes that affect the entire website. For instance, if you don't like the look and feel of your website, you can change it by swapping out a different theme. Themes control the look and feel of your website.

If you need some extra functionality, you can install plugins. These are pieces of code that gets attached to your WordPress installation that performs specific functions. For instance, if you need scheduling functionality, look for plugins that will accomplish this.

WordPress also supports widgets, which are similar in a way, to plugins. These are snippets of code that perform functionality, but are usually tied to the website theme. For instance, you can use widgets to add advertising to your website. Or, if you need to add contact information at the bottom of your website, you would usually do this using a widget.

WordPress Has a Learning Curve

It's unlikely that you'll be able to start developing day one when you install WordPress website. That is, unless you already know how to do it. If you are new to WordPress, you will have to come up to speed.

However, it's not difficult, at all. It would not have come as far as it has if it were. Once you learn the foundation, it is simply a matter of working with the interface to get used to it. Then, it becomes a piece of cake.

Hiring a WordPress Designer

Before, I mentioned that hiring a designer to build your website is expensive. This was back before WordPress (or CMS) existed. Hiring a WordPress designer is much cheaper than having someone design your website from scratch.

In fact, if you find someone who is trying to set your website up for thousands of dollars, move on. They are taking advantage of your lack of knowledge about the process. It should not cost more than $100 or less to get a basic WordPress installation going.

To be fair, that $100 is for a basic set up with a free theme that can be found online. If you need more customization, you should expect to pay depending on what you want created. If there are themes and plugins available for a fee, you should not expect the designer to eat the cost of licensing those on your website. You need to pick up those costs.

Also, if the designer is required to create custom themes and plugins themselves (assuming they have the expertise), it could and should cost several hundreds of dollars (maybe even thousands). It will depend on many factors, including how extensive the customization is going to be.

My suggestion is to get a basic website going and then as it becomes popular and starts making you money, you can use some of the money to add customization.

Hybrid Solutions

There are platforms available online, that are a cross between doing it yourself and having the platform do it for you. I call these hybrid approaches. These solutions allow you to drag and drop components onto your base platform which gives you added features and functions.

The following (not exclusive) are some examples:

  • Wix.com
  • Weebly.com
  • Web.com

Another name for these types of websites are website builders. They give you the ability to create full scale websites without knowing any code.

Limitations of Website Builders

Website builders pride themselves on being easy-to-use and creating websites quickly. However, there are some drawbacks to using these types of websites.

  • The Functionality is Predefined
  • Some include advertising
  • Lack of control

You get some features for free in the base version of their packages. But, to do anything worthwhile, you have to upgrade and pay a monthly fee.

Next Steps...

As you can see, you have several choices. When you learn to do it yourself, you control every aspect of the website. When you rely on other platforms, you are stuck with whatever they dish out for you. They may even tell you what you can and cannot include on your website.

Learning how to set up a WordPress website is a great way to get an affordable small business website design. Take a look at the following to see just how easy it is:

Embracing the Unsubscribe Button

Wouldn't it be great if everyone who came to your website, signed up for your email list?

And, wouldn't it be better still if those same people bought from you every time you sent an email out?

The Ultimate: if they stayed on your email list forever!

The truth is, not everyone is going to be interested with what you offer. And that's okay!

Some people will come to your website by accident. Maybe a search engine didn't get the search criteria right and click on your website.

Then, there are going to be people who may belong on your website but for one reason or another decides that your email list is not right for them. This too, is okay!

In fact, you don't want these people on your list. It seems counter-intuitive as most people would want as many people on their email list as possible. But, the reality is if they don't want to there, you don't want them there.

Why Not?

The first reason is your autoresponder service is charging you for the number of subscribers on your list. Even though many will let you have up to a certain number for the base monthly fee, why non-engaging subscribers who won't open your emails and never buy from you?

Think of your emails list as your community or private club. The members (subscribers) come to find out what is going on in your club. You want to cater to people who care about this community.

Another reason why you don't want the non-engaging members is that they bring down your quality score at your autoresponder. Most people are not aware that unopened emails or deleted emails is used against you. It's not a huge factor but the more this happens, the more it hurts.

One caution: if you have several people unsubscribing to your list, this could sent up red flags to your autoresponder company. Besides, it doesn't do much good for you either. If you find this is happening, review what kind of messages you are sending. There's got to be some underlying reason for the mass exits.

Provide Value to Your Subscribers

This is an obvious statement but you'd be surprised how many people get this wrong. A good rule of thumb is to provide four or five emails that are not sales-related to every one that may be. This is usually a ratio marketers find works very well.

Another option is to try and make all your money on your website and send them to your website via the email messages. A great example would be Adsense ads. You would include some information in your email and then send them to your website to get more detailed information. The page that contains that information contains ads where you get paid when they click on them.

You could also incorporate banner ads from other advertising platforms on the pages you send them to.

Be aware that readers are more sophisticated these days and have adopted a kind of ad blindness. Banner advertising is not as effective as it used to be.

When you keep your focus on high quality emails, you are likely to retain members of your list for much longer than if you use it solely for selling to them. You also build trust with them when you are giving them the valuable information. Over time, they will have no qualms about buying from you over and over again. When they associate your name and brand with the content you send, it becomes much easier to sell.

Don't Take Unsubscribes Personally

I already discussed why you should welcome or embrace people who unsubscribe to your list. Some online business owners take it personally when it happens and get discouraged. Again, unless it is mass unsubscribes, accept that it is a normal practice and expect it to happen.

Sleuthing Out the Pretenders

There's a saying in the money-making world, "Fake It Until You Make It!"

Essentially, this means that you pretend to be successful to get people to buy your stuff or to sign up to your newsletter, or whatever you are trying to get them to do.

I don't know about you, but following this advice seems a bit underhanded and sneaky to me. It's deceptive. I get that people have to start somewhere to build up their reputation and authority. But, does it have to be with deception?

The motivation is the classic chicken vs. egg dilemma. How do you sell when you are not an expert? If you are not able to say, how are you going to ever gain the credibility to eventually to sell.

I get it! But, I believe there are better ways to go about it.

My Credentials

Okay, so if I am going to extol the virtues of flushing out the pretenders, then I should have at least some credential to back me up, right?

Yes, absolutely! I am not yet a blogger of the status of the likes of Neil Patel, Seth Godin, and others. I am working on it though. However, I have successfully sold through my websites and continue to do so and I am a published author who makes a steady income from my books.

So, while you may not see my name or my blog posts immediately appear when you search on Google, I am taking legitimate steps to grow my business and reputation.

I created GetPaidBootCamp.com from the perspective of a beginner back in 2009. I did let it run idle for several years as I had other commitments that got in the way at the time. However, When I started up again a few years ago, it was with the commitment to help people make money online.

My efforts have been working. Again, I am not completely where I want to be yet, but I have no doubt I will be there soon. And, the knowledge I have gained is now allowing me to feel confident that I can call myself an authority.

What to Look For When Evaluating Others

Suppose you receive an offer in an email that states this person can help you become a bestselling author. Great! You are stoked up thinking that your ship has come in and you're going to enter the big leagues, right?

Not so fast. Don't you think the person teaching how to do this should have at least one bestselling book? In fact, if they have a great and successful method, shouldn't they have several bestselling books?

When a blogger tells you he can supercharge your traffic and make your blog become influential, are they showing you the various websites they have made that are influential?

The point is, always look beyond the sales pitch to make sure the seller is walking the walk and not just talking the talk. Otherwise, how you can you trust the material you are buying is going work? And how will the seller possibly answer any question you may have in a credible fashion?

What if Your Not an Expert or Influential?

The one lesson I have learned in the several years I have been doing this is to be honest. If you are new, then set up your blog in a way that is an experiment in learning about what you are blogging about. Then, as you gain credibility and authority, you can start incorporating those skills into our blogs.

Using this way of blogging can actually be used to your benefit. You will show your readers that it's possible for someone new to learn and do. By blogging about your experience, they can use what you've learned as a road map to succeed. This immediately increases your credibility over time while allowing you to build your blog presence.

Reviewing Products You Have Not Used or Purchased

I know of colleagues who will cal me out on this one. But, I firmly believe that you should not review products that you haven't at least tried yourself. It's another deceptive practice. How can you tout the benefits of product and pass it off as if you are the one who received those benefits?

You'll see plenty of advice floating around on the web that you can use what others have written as the basis for your review. That is NOT a review. That is a research report.

By the way, I do believe you can gather other people's reviews and other value-added information about a product and pass it off as research. You can state that you have not bought this product yourself but based on your extensive research, you would be comfortable buying this product, etc. Your viewers will appreciate the honesty and they still will buy from you since they often don't have time to do this research themselves.

Another option is to buy the products you are going to review and use them. See if they benefits derived match with what is said in the sales page. Add your insights about what you liked and didn't like. When you have legitimately bought the product, you can feel good about writing a review.

A Note of Caution: If you receive a product for free in exchange for a review, you should disclose this fact in your review. This is per FTC guidelines and they are cracking down on people who don't disclose.

False Testimonials

Don't even think about including testimonials that are fabricated. This is something the FTC is going full force to combat. It too is deceptive. Also, don't make claims about products that cannot be verified through studies. Acai berries were the source of major complaints during their popularity.

Piggyback Off of the Success of Others

Another way to gain credibility is to align yourself with people who already have it. If you can get influential people to endorse what you are doing, this can go a long way into building up your status.

Also, if there is a service that you belong to that contains people who have succeeded with the service, you can use that influence to prop up your blog. You have proof that others have made it work in that network. If you use this method, it's not a bad idea to ask some of those experienced and successful members if you can name drop. Most will let you do it.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions

If you get a money making offer, does the seller make himself accessible? You can use this as a litmus test to see if they are willing to answer questions. Ask them to see websites that are successful or books that they have published, etc. Be fair though. If they aren't making outrageous claims and they can show success in certain areas, consider that when making your decision.

Honesty Truly Is the Best Policy

No one likes to be deceived. So, don't do it. By being honest with your readers you will build trust with them. They will find it refreshing that you rise above other who are using deceptive practices. You will stand out because of it.

Find a way to use what you know or don't know in a way that will help readers. They will get a kick out of keeping track of your progress and watch you as you grow.

Writing for Free: Is It Ever a Good Idea?

You answer a writing job ad and the poster asks you to write a sample for them for free. Do you accept?

I've heard horror stories from other writers and have experienced it myself. You'll find job posters who have no intention of hiring writers. They are only looking for several writers to produce free content for them.

While it's certainly a nasty practice, it goes with the territory when you write for others.

Is there anything you can do when this happens? There is, and I'll tell you what to do below.

The situation is annoying but it makes you wonder if there are situations where it makes sense to write for free?

The answer is yes and here are the situations when you may want to consider it:

  • Guest Posting
  • To Get Published Clips
  • Specific Topics You Need to Come Up to Speed With
  • Reports to Giveaway in Exchange for Opt Ins
  • Bulk Content Deals
  • Sales Brochures to Advertise Your Business
  • Press Releases for Your Business

Guest Posting

Guest Posting got a bad reputation a few years back when Google's Matt Cutts announced that Google was cracking down on the practice. Bloggers freaked out because of it but Matts later modified his statement to say that Google wasn't against guest posting in general. They were just going to go after guest posting for the sole purpose of getting back links to your website. Specifically, they were targeting services that offered guest posting exchanges and other such practices.

Even with the additional statement, guest posting took a big hit. There are plenty of bloggers that still refuse to do it. I think it is overblown and can still be considered in the right circumstances. I think if you legitimately look for influential bloggers who are looking for quality work and you spread out the pool, you should not have any problems.

If you do believe that guest posting can help you, use the following tips to help you get it right:

Don't approach the top influential bloggers. They won't respond to you. They are simply too busy. Instead, approach the up-and-comers. Find the middle-tier bloggers who are working hard to make a name for themselves and are starting to gain some traction.

Read through the blogs you would like to target to get a feel for the tone and the content. Use some of what you read as a basis for your pitch to the blogger. If you haven't even read their blog, they probably won't consider you. If you can mention points about what they have written, this can go a long way in getting their attention.

Once you have a feel for the styles of those targeted blogs, come up with a few relevant topics and write on those topics. Yes, do this before they even know you or accept work from you.

Once you have the posts written and you have read them over several times to make sure they are error free (IMPORTANT!!!!), you can send an email to the owner of the blog and let them know that you have written these posts. Ask them if they would be interested in including them on their blog.

What if They Say No?

Move on! Find other bloggers in the same niche that may be interested. If you contact enough people, at least one is bound to say yes.

When you find ones that are willing to post your work, you may or may not want to ask if they are willing to share it on their social media channels. Many guest bloggers feel you should not ask for this, while others will state that it is okay. It's a personal preference but the influential bloggers will probably share without you asking. No guarantees though.

It is fine for you to share the post when they publish it. In fact, the bloggers will likely want you to do this so they can get your traffic to their site. It's up to you if you want to ask for permission to do this, as a courtesy.

Try to establish a relationship with the blogger who agrees to post your work. They say a rising tide raises all ships. Offer to do future posts for the blogger or try to help out as much as you can. Ask them if there is anything else you can do for them.

Getting Published Clips

If you are a freelance writer, chances are good that potential clients have asked you for published clips. If you are not familiar with that term (then you really haven't done freelance writing 🙂 basically, it is writing that you have done that has been published on well known websites.

Some potential clients will accept free places like HubPages and other similar places. But, others want clips from highly established magazines and websites. Having published clips on influential blogs is going to help you big time with this. Even if the potential client isn't familiar with the influential up-and-comers, yet, it's only a matter of time before they will. So you may not get the gig initially. But, as the influencer grows, you can always resubmit later, at which point your post is published on that blog.

Published clip dilemma solved!

Specific Niche Topics

You are going to find niches that pay quite well. However, if you don't have any clips in that niche and you are not very familiar with the topics included, it's going to be difficult to land those high paying gigs. The solution: create your own blog in that niche and start creating content for it. Be consistent and learn as much as you can. You could also approach experts in the field of that niche and ask them if they are willing to post on your site. This gives some credibility and authority to your website.

One word of caution: don't pass yourself off as an expert if you are not. Remember, you will need to write about the topics from the perspective of someone who knows what they are talking about. Your potential clients will notice if you are not!

Giveaway Reports

While these aren't as effective as they used to be, they still can get some people to opt into your list. Write a report that can be sent to potential subscribers. Make sure what you include is extremely high quality. Use graphics and other stimulating assets. Keep the report as short as possible. Try to find a way to get them to read the report by including interactive elements in it or some other methods like contests, quizzes, etc.

Even if they opt in but don't read the report, you now have them on your list. Make sure you offer great information to this list. Remind them in future emails that there is some kind of surprise in the report and they would have known that had they read it (they probably will go back and read it). Make the surprise worthwhile.

Bulk Content Deals

If you are looking for new clients, you could offer them bulk deals on your content. For example, if you charge $50 per document, you could offer first time clients the first two free as long as they order ten articles and pay upfront. So, for that first order, they would pay for eight but get ten articles.

You could continue this concept for regular clients. Remember, that when you get clients that give you a steady stream of writing work, you have less prospecting that you need to do. This should be reflected in your prices. Prospecting takes you away from writing, which is the primary method on how you get paid.

Sales Brochures for Your Brand

It should go without say that you should create sales brochures and other marketing materials for your brand. But, there is something even more subtle about doing this yourself. You can market this as a service to clients. You can also outsource it if you are not good at doing this or you don't have the time. You can still market the service when you outsource, but your margins will be smaller.

Creating this kind of item on your own does take some practice. Too many people hold the belief that they are not good at design and it isn't as difficult as you may believe. You need to try it and keep going. However, if you don't have the time or the inclination, don't be afraid to outsource. End of story!

Create a Press Release for Your Brand

Much in the same way that you want to create sales material for your brand, you also want to learn how to create press releases. In fact, it's probably a more important item from a promotional aspect. For one thing, this is much easier to learn than to be a graphic designer (Sales Brochures) and it is definitely something that you can market as a service.

What's more is the more of these you create for your brand, the higher the chance of getting it some much-needed recognition. Press releases are an underutilized promotional method. The best way to learn is by analyzing ones that currently exist.

What to Do When Potential Clients Ask You For Fresh Samples

Getting back to the situation presented at the beginning of this article. When you become a seasoned writer and have clients under your belt, you will feel comfortable telling these clients that you already have samples of your work and that should be sufficient enough to make a decision. If they are insistent on your writing for them - to me that is a huge red flag - but it is up to you if you want to honor the request.

You could agree to write half the number of words they specify. If they ask you to write a 400 word document, tell them you'd be willing to write a 200 word document and that this, along with your other samples, should be enough to make a determination.

If they are really insistent and you agree to write what they ask for, specify that you only will do it if they give you a decision about hiring you within 24 hours after you submit. Then, if you don't hear from them in that 24 hour period, publish the created sample somewhere. It could be on your blog or some other free blog website. This way, if they publish it themselves later, they will get flagged for duplicate content.

Finally Revealed: The Secret to Creating Top Quality Content

I am going to finally reveal the secret to creating top quality content.

This is the same secret many bloggers try to hide from you!

Once you learn how to do this, you will have the means to create the best quality you possibly can.

Let me ask you a question. When you create content, do you use a standard Google search?

If a standard Google search is your primary means to fill your content, you may doing your readers a disservice.

Whatever your favorite search engine is, it should certainly be used as a starting point. And if you are a Google Search Maniac, then you have the ability to go deeper with your research than those who are not.

Readers Know How to Do a Basic Search

What I am suggesting with this article, is that you do more than just a basic search. Your readers know how to do the same standard search as you do. When they discover that all you are doing is regurgitating the search results you find, will they continue to trust you as an authoritative source? How would you feel if you found out a blog you like to read was doing the same thing?

Research Where Others Won't

Many content creators use a standard Google (or other search engine) search and create their content based on that research. Once they have created their content, they publish it and call it a day!

What if you learned how to find information in unconventional places?

Can you see how researching in places they don't will set you apart? If you can provide insights that others won't (because they don't know how), your readers are going to respect you. This is the big, giant secret to creating quality content.

Creating Quality Content

You hear this term being thrown around the internet, but not too many can tell you how to do it. Well, if you can get deeper insight into your topics, you hold the key to creating that quality content. It really is that simple!

What's not as simple is finding the deep research needed to include for your quality content. That's where I can help. I have written a book about Online Research. It will take you through the process from beginning to end and show you exactly how to find better quality information.

If you are involved with content creation in any capacity, can you see the potential with this?

Click to Tweet

Creating Quality Content Requires a Commitment of Time

Content creators are in too much of a rush to publish as much content in the smallest amount of time. This is a mistake. You will do much better by analyzing what your readers are looking for and spending time finding the right kind of information for them to consume.

If you content publishing mantra is quantity over quality, your efforts are going to be wasted. People will pick up on low quality information. They will also recognize quality when they see it. Because higher quality is rare, it will attract readers anytime they find it.

it is far better to publish something great once-a-week, that to publish something average no a daily basis.

Here is another unintended (but good) consequence. When you get into the habit of spending time on your publishing efforts, you will get better and fast at producing it. This means that eventually, you will be able to publish the same quality every two or three days, rather than once per week.

What About Outsourcing Your Content Creation?

I believe strongly in outsourcing. When used correctly, it can offer great leverage for your projects. But, you have to ensure the quality control on the people you select. Again, think quality over quantity. If you come across a worker who is not cut out for your level of quality, move on! Never skimp just for the sake of getting published.

Next Steps...

Hopefully, I have convinced you to keep the quality high whenever you publish any content. When you learn the proper methods of researching online, you will be well equipped to make that happen.

What this means is readers will return to your website craving more of your content.

To help you get started, I am going to offer you a free guide on How to Become a Google Search Maniac. In this guide, you will learn the advanced operators to use in Google that can help you find exactly what you are looking for. It is part of my book, Taming the Online Research Beast and it is yours to keep whether you buy the book or not. Hurry though, as this is a limited time offer!

That's the good news!

You may even start to make enough money to give up your regular job. If this does happen, you are now faced with situations that you have never come across before. You need to worry about:

  • Taxes
  • Time Management
  • Eating Right
  • Exercise
  • Separating Work From Home Life
  • Taking Time Off and Dealing with Sickness
  • Dealing with Loneliness

Taxes

If you ignore the tax ramifications of your online earnings, expect to get a visit from the tax man. While many countries have different rules surrounding this topic, most want their share of your profits.

Taxes have become quite complicated, especially with respect to online businesses. For this reason, consider hiring a professional tax advisor. They can help you navigate the treacherous waters of the tax code.

If you decide to hire someone, make sure you find a qualified professional. In the United States, this usually entails someone with a CPA certification. This is not to say all CPAs are good or even qualified. For this, you need to get some references, preferably from friends.

Time Management

It's wonderful that you are working for yourself but this can be a double-edged sword. You know have the responsibility for assigning your own tasks. Before, you had a boss to do it for you (most of us, anyway). Now, it's all on you.

There are too many distractions in your home and way too easy to hit up those distractions. It's a good idea to create a space for you dedicated to working. It can be an office but whatever you choose, make sure all your family members understand it is your workplace. This is not to say there can never be interruptions. You just want to try to keep them at a minimum.

Another factor when dealing with your own time management, is to come up with tasks that are the most likely to keep you on track with your goals. You did make goals, didn't you? If not, it's back to the drawing board! Don't ignore this.

But, when you do have your set of goals, make sure what you do on a day-to-day basis will get you to those goals in the quickest amount of time. It's easy to say that you were busy cleaning up thousands of emails (and sometimes this is necessary). However, this should not be part of your regular routine if it does nothing in meeting your goals.

Eating Right

This is not just the domain of working from home. People don't eat right when working in a company, either. However, it's easier to sneak in bad food when others are not watching. When you work in an office environment, you may get people to comment when you eat chocolate cake everyday for lunch. It's okay to do this once in a while. A steady diet of it will get your coworkers' buzzing.

That isn't the case when you are working at home, by yourself. If you have access to that chocolate cake and no one is around to see you eat it, the temptation will be greater for you.

The best approach is not to avail yourself access to that chocolate cake to begin with. Don't buy it. Have healthy snacks that you can use as a replacement. Contrary to popular belief, plenty of great-tasting healthy snacks exist in the marketplace.

Getting Some Exercise

You don't have to be a marathon runner to stay in shape. Too many people associate exercise with running five miles per day and lifting twelve times their weight (exaggeration!) Walking is a fantastic exercise that can be done anywhere. Take the time to schedule some regular exercise into your working-from-home routine.

Separating Work from Home Life

When you worked for a company, you went to work for set hours and then came home. In most case, except for extraordinary circumstances, when you were home, you didn't think much about your job. Perhaps a thought or two would pop into your head about a situation you were dealing with. But, for the most part, there was a natural separation between your job and your home life.

When you are working for yourself at home, it's to easy to bounce back into work mode. Maybe you get a call late at night, and you feel compelled to handle it. The problem is, when you don't draw the line in the sand, those lines blur. You end up working way too many hours on your business.

While you see and hear about stories of people "burning the midnight oil," this should be the exception, not the rule. If you burn out in your business, you are going to eventually hate doing it and it will suffer in a big way. Keep the lines clearly delineated.

Taking Time Off and Dealing with Sickness

Just because you work for yourself at home, doesn't mean you don't deserve to take a vacation. Everyone needs a break from work. You don't even need to go away for you to refresh yourself. Commit to taking a couple of days for you time. Read a book, play piano, or whatever you like to do as part of your leisure plan.

Being sick is also going to happen whether you work for someone else or yourself. It's too easy to simply push forward and work through your sickness. Sometimes, you have no choice due to deadlines, etc. However, doing this can prolong your sickness which means you will continue to work while you are miserable.

If your business follows the model where you exchange hours for dollars, being sick cause you anxiety as you won't be making any money. However, if you give yourself time to rest, your recovery is likely to be much quicker than working through your sickness.

Another option is to create a business that earns passively, whether you are working or not. It's like dividend-paying stocks. They pay you consistently (all things being equal) over time. There are plenty of businesses that you can set up that offer recurring commissions (think paid subscriptions!)

Another option is to hire people to do your work for you. This way, if you do become sick, the work continues. Of course, a lot depends on the people you hire as to whether work actually gets done when you are away. One way around this is to outsource the work so that you can check in to ensure things are getting done.

Dealing with Loneliness

One common complaint among self-employed business owners is the loneliness that comes with the job. It's great to be able to set your own hours and work in your proverbial pajamas (not actually a good idea!) However, you don't always have people to talk to. You may have clients that you speak to on the phone or interact with online. But, it's not the same as a camaraderie that exists with coworkers in a company.

If you start feeling like this, you may be tempted to hit up a neighbor or a friend to spend time with. It's okay to do this on occasion. Just keep it to a minimum and only when you are caught up on your work. If you need some face time with people, consider joining clubs or groups, preferably related to your business. When you do this, you get to spend time with people while networking at the same time.

Conclusion

Working at home for yourself can be a rewarding career choice. It's not for everyone and there different challenges that you will face. Use the guidelines from this article to help manage those challenges.
